As Draper City continues growing, its police department is moving into newly finished digs at City Hall.

On Thursday, Draper City unveiled the new, $4-million police wing on the building, at 1020 E. Pioneer Road. The police department outgrew its old office, so the city began constructing the new wing for them last year.

"They were just in the basement of City Hall" before, said city spokeswoman Maridene Hancock. "… With the growth of the city, it outgrew the space." Draper's population has almost doubled to 50,000 in the past 12 years, said Draper City Mayor Troy Walker in a statement.

Staff photographs in City Hall show the size of the police department beginning in 2003, and there's "quite a difference" looking at the current staff photo, Hancock said. Past and present staffing figures were not immediately available, but as of a 2014 annual report, the department had 52 employees, including 40 sworn officers.
