A Logan man who drowned in a weekend kayaking accident on northern Utah's Cutler Reservoir has been identified as William Franklin Kline, 76, of Logan.

Kline and his wife, Elizabeth, were paddling about a mile northwest of the boat dock about 11 a.m. on Sunday when they both fell into the water, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

The woman managed to hang onto one of the kayaks while her husband attempted to swim to shore.

At first, the couple, neither of them wearing life jackets, kept in contact by shouting out to each other, but when William Kline went silent a few minutes later, his wife swam in search and found him floating face-down.

She was able to call 911 for help, and sheriff's deputies soon responded, along with paramedics. The victim was unresponsive and later declared dead at Logan Regional Hospital.

The exact cause of Kline's death has not yet been determined and will not be known until the state Medical Examiner's Office completes its investigation, according to a sheriff's office press release.
