An investigation of a possible sexual assault at Utah State University Eastern in Price has led to the suspension of all activities of the men's basketball team.

USU spokesman Tim Vitale stressed Friday that there are no suspects and no determination that a sexual assault even took place. However, he said "some troubling details arose during the course of the investigation" that caused officials to look at the team and impose the suspension.

The campus police and the university's Title IX office — which enforces a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex/gender and harassment, including sexual violence — are both looking into the alleged incident. Until the investigation is completed, team members can practice individually at the gym but not with each other, Vitale said.

According to Vitale, a counselor at USU received a call Sept. 4 from someone who said a woman had bruises and scrapes and might have been assaulted. He said the counselor spoke to that woman and also noticed the injuries; the woman said she had no recollection of what happened.

At the suggestion of the counselor, the woman went to a hospital for an exam, Vitale said. The university issued a safety alert to students that there might have been an assault.

A number of people are being interviewed, Vitale said, adding that he thinks the investigation will be completed by early October.
