An 1870s love story involving two Chinese immigrants caught up in gang rivalries will begin filming in Utah later this month, funded partly with a tax incentive worth up to $870,225 from the state.

The Governor's Office of Economic Development board approved the post-performance tax rebate for "The Jade Pendant," a feature-length drama projected to generate 90 local jobs and almost $3.5 million in spending during its 30-day filming period and three months of post-production work.If the production does not leave $1 million in the state, GOED said the incentive dips to just below $700,000,

Principal photography is set to begin Sept. 28, largely in Salt Lake City, in the movie directed by Po-Chih Leong. In addition to a cast of 18, The Jade Pendant will have a crew of 75 and 500 extras.

Produced by Scott Rosenfeldt and Thomas Leong, the film was one of four that received GOED incentives.

Four Amigos Entertainment will get a tax credit of up to $171,600 to film Lifeforce, a television pilot for the Syfy network. Based on a novel by Colin Wilson and the subject of a 1985 movie, Lifeforce is expected to generate $858,000 in spending and to leave $200,000 in the state. It will be filmed over a two-week period this fall in Salt Lake and Tooele counties.

The film by director Nick Petersen and producers Mark Mathis and David Williams will have a cast of six with 20 extras and a crew of 47.

Vineyard Productions will receive up to $44,000 in tax credits to film "Prowess," a family adventure with a cast of one (plus two extras) and crew of 25. One day of filming and three months of post-production work are projected to drive $220,000 in spending. The producer is Jeff T. Miller.

GOED also authorized up to $42,000 for "Phobic," a crime thriller that will begin filming in mid-October in Salt Lake and Utah counties. The production headed by Jason Hatfield and Justin Lyon, with Bryce Clark as director, will have a cast of 21, crew of 19, 18 extras and stimulate $210,000 in spending.
