Police say a man thrust a 12-inch knife blade into another man's back late Sunday in Salt Lake City.

The victim is expected to survive. About 10 p.m., a 40-year-old man was standing on the street near 1200 W. Pacific Ave. (440 South) Salt Lake City police Lt. Scott Teerlink said a car dropped off another man, also age 40. That man walked from the car, drew the knife and thrust it into the first man's back, Teerlink said. The blade pierced the man's abdomen.

Teerlink said police don't know what spurred the stabbing. Witnesses called police and saw the suspect run behind the building. Officers pursued on foot, chasing the suspect over a fence. A K9 found the suspect and he surrenderer, Teerlink said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail.
