A man accused of killing his ex-wife in Brigham City earlier this year has been found competent to proceed with his criminal case, according to court records.

Spencer Rumel Gerlach, 20, is charged in 1st District Court with first-degree felony murder for the April death of 19-year-old Keltsie Mansfield Gerlach.

He also is charged with domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony.

Two mental-health evaluators determined that Gerlach understands the court proceedings and charges filed against him, according to a docket entry from earlier this week.

A preliminary hearing, to determine whether there is enough evidence to advance the case to trial, is set for Sept. 30 before Judge Brandon Maynard.

Police say Spencer Gerlach called 911 from the woman's apartment on April 15 and told the dispatcher he had stabbed his wife. The pair divorced on March 17, court records show.

Gerlach waited for police and was arrested without incident. The couple's 15-month-old daughter, who was sleeping in a crib in another room, was unharmed, police have said.

It was the city's first prosecuted homicide in nine years.
