A Layton man who shot and wounded Utah Highway Patrol officer at a highway construction zone died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Thursday.

Drew Morgan Moyer's autopsy was conducted by the Utah Medical Examiner as part of an ongoing investigation of the shooting.

Layton police released the findings Thursday but provided no additional information and did not specify where the fatal bullet pierced the 21-year-old Moyer's body — though UHP sources initially said Moyer died of a gunshot to the head.

"We just don't want to release those details at this time," Layton police Sgt. Riley Richins said Thursday.

Police say Moyer drove his car into a repaving work zone on Highway 193 near its intersection with Hill Field Road just before 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 28. After coming to a stop, Moyer allegedly opened fire on UHP Sgt. Paul Kotter, one of four officers providing security at the site.

Kotter was shot three times — two bullets struck him in the back, and a third hit his buttocks — and returned fire before dropping to the ground.

Moyer sped away through the construction area with another officer in pursuit, and then crashed into the back of a water truck. He was found dead in his car by troopers.

Police initially said they believed Moyer shot himself, although before the autopsy's release, they had not ruled out the possibility that he had been shot when Kotter returned fire.

Kotter, a 15-year veteran who is primarily a training officer, survived the shooting, thanks in part to his bullet-proof vest.

As of Thursday, Kotter was recovering at home, doing well and "looking forward to coming back to work," UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said.

His unmarked patrol vehicle was not equipped with a dashboard camera, and he was not wearing a body camera.
