Two unrelated fires kept West Valley City firefighters busy in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday.

One of them, a barn fire, killed three horses. A neighbor called dispatchers about the fire about 2:30 a.m. on the 2400 South block of Winton Street, according to a West Valley City Fire Department news release.

Firefighters arrived to see that the barn had "already burned nearly to the ground," officials said. Besides the three horses in the barn, the fire also destroyed several small storage buildings on the property and damaged another nearby storage building.

Earlier, about 1:15 a.m., a duplex carport near 5400 W. 4000 South caught fire, fully engulfing the three cars parked underneath it.

"The people inside the unit nearest the carport woke to the smell of smoke and the noise of the fire," according to the release. "They were able to escape their unit and alert the neighbors who also escaped their unit."

The flames spread from the carport to the attic before firefighters extinguished the blaze. The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
