Unified Police officers took two female suspected serial vehicle burglars and thieves off the street, but not before a wild chase that ended with the suspects' stolen vehicle crashing in Emigration Canyon.

Lt. Lex Bell said a UPD officer responding to a reported vehicle burglary about 2:45 p.m. Thursday in Neffs Canyon learned that the suspects had left in a white GMC Yukon with a broken-out rear side window. The same suspects and vehicle were believed involved in a credit card fraud incident at a Millcreek Smith's Market later in the day.

Still later, the vehicle was spotted at Little Dell Reservoir, where the suspects were seen spray-painting the SUV black. As additional officers were dispatched, the suspects drove off, heading up Pine Crest Canyon.

In unmarked cars, UPD detectives spotted the suspects breaking into mail boxes, and plans were made to lay tire spikes in the SUV's path as it exited at the intersection of Pine Crest and Emigration canyons.

"Officers were able to spike all tires as the vehicle fled down Emigration Canyon at 40 mph," Bell stated. "The Yukon lost all four tires and finally crashed into the creek embankment at 5730 E. Emigration Canyon. The two female occupants fled on foot down into the creek and were quickly taken into custody."

The women, ages 27 and 29, were booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of numerous vehicle burglary, theft and credit card fraud counts.

However, police also were following up leads concerning a third, male suspect spotted with the women initially in Pine Crest Canyon. He was suspected in the theft of a red 2003 Subaru Forrester, license plate number 065MEA, seen leaving the area.

Meanwhile, UPD has begun the task of trying to contact some 20 suspected victims of the trio after finding a duffel bag — stuffed with stolen identities, passports, vehicle titles and bank records — inside the crashed Yukon.

Anyone with information or questions regarding this case is asked to call UPD at 801-743-7000.
