One motorist died and another suffered critical injuries after a truck hydroplaned and crashed into two other vehicles Wednesday in Uintah County.

A Dodge Dakota was traveling east on U.S. Highway 40 about 9 miles east of Roosevelt about 2:20 p.m., when it began to hydroplane as the driver was trying to pass other traffic, Utah Highway Patrol troopers wrote in a news release.

The rear of the Dodge drifted into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Chevrolet pickup that was pulling a trailer. The Dodge then spun completely into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with a westbound Ford F-150.

The driver of the Dodge was not wearing a safety belt and was ejected from the truck, troopers wrote; he died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford was wearing a safety belt and had to be extracted. She suffered critical injuries and was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake County.

The driver of the Chevrolet suffered no serious injuries and declined medical treatment.

UHP was withholding the name of the victim pending family notifications.
