A man suffered critical injuries Wednesday night after he was run down by his own car, which had been stolen earlier in the day.

The man and his wife were driving a different car about 4 p.m. Wednesday when they spotted their stolen car traveling south on 1300 East at about 2000 South, Salt Lake City police detective Cody Lougy said. The couple's 1999 Subaru Outback had been stolen Wednesday morning from the Brickyard area, Lougy said.

The couple pulled over while their stolen car was stopped in rush hour traffic, and the man got out to confront the driver, Lougy said. The driver did not get out of the car and instead tried to do a U-turn in the road, hitting a curb and a trash bin before striking the man and dragging him.

The driver of the stolen car fled north on 1300 East, Lougy said.

The car's owner was in critical condition but was expected to survive, police said. The car was found near 700 East and 1400 South, but the driver who hit the car's owner had fled.

The driver was described as a white male, about 25 to 30 years old, with a thin build and extremely pale complexion, police said.
