Clearfield police confirmed a 25-year-old South Weber man died when his car collided with a semi-trailer rig Tuesday morning at the Freeport Center.

A 911 call reporting the crash came in at 7:23 a.m. from the area of C Street and 13th Street. Paramedics arrived to find several passers-by attempting to aid the victim, but Dalton Bowers died at the scene, said Clearfield police Lt. Kelly Bennett.

According to a news release, witnesses reported that several vehicles had stopped for a semi in the process of detaching its trailer at an unloading dock when Bowers' car, a 2008 Toyota Corolla, approached. Bowers apparently decided to try to pass the stalled traffic and continue northbound.

Instead, the victim's car slammed into and under the 5-ton trailer. The impact moved the trailer about 15 feet.

An investigation was ongoing, but speed was believed to be a factor.
