A father and his 5-year-old daughter died Sunday evening in Weber County after a car rear-ended theirs on I-15.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers were trying to slow traffic on I-15 near the I-84 interchange in Riverdale so they could remove debris from the road. At about 5:30 p.m., a car with a mother, father and two children was stopped behind a semi-truck there when a car rear-ended it, sending the family's car into the back of the semi, according to a UHP news release.

The 30-year-old father was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, but she was later upgraded to serious condition. A helicopter took the two children with severe injuries to local hospitals.

The 5-year-old girl died at a hospital, while her 7-year-old sibling was in critical condition, the release states. A dog inside their vehicle was also killed, but no others were injured in the crash.

Northbound I-15 at Riverdale Road was closed for several hours Sunday night while troopers investigated.
