A 23-year-old Washington state man died early Wednesday in the fiery crash of his car and a semi-trailer rig on Interstate 15 near Fillmore.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said that Derek J. White, of Sammamish, Wash., was driving north when his 2004 Honda Civic entered a construction zone near mile post 170 about 12:30 a.m. White drifted to the left edge of the roadway, overcorrected to the right, and then went into a spin that took him into the median.

White's car then re-entered the northbound lanes backwards and slid to a stop facing sideways in the left lane, where the semi struck the car broadside.

Both vehicles careened through a right-of-way fence, coming to a halt on a frontage road, where both then caught fire.

White was pinned inside his car and died at the scene.

The semi's driver escaped uninjured, Royce said.
