A West Jordan man has been charged with firing a gun 19 times into a baby's bedroom.

The 19-year-old man was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with 29 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony.

The shooting occurred July 21 at a Taylorsville apartment, near 4500 S. Atherton Park Drive. Officers said they arrived to find 29 spent shell casings, including ones for 9-mm, .22-caliber and .25-caliber bullets, according to the charges.

Police determined that 19 of those bullets entered a room where an 18-month-old child was sleeping, "narrowly missing the child's crib," the charges add. No one was reported injured, according to police dispatchers.

A witness told police that after a car pulled up to the apartment, two people got out and began shooting. Both men then got back into the car and fled, according to the charges.

An informant told a Unified Police detective that the suspect and three other people were involved in the shooting. Police say the informant was able to provide details about the shooting that they had not released to the public.

The 19-year-old man told police in an interview that he does own a .25-caliber handgun, the charges add.
