West Valley City police quickly made two arrests following the fatal, gang-related stabbing of a man during a July 11 party.

But as of Wednesday, more than three weeks later, no charges have been filed and both men have been released from jail as the investigation continues into the case, which police characterize as "complex."

David Louis Candelario, 21, had been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder in connection with the stabbing death of 20-year-old Fidenzo Urcino — who was apparently armed with a gun.

Xavier Emmanuel Anderson, 19, who reportedly drove Candelario to and from the party, had been arrested on suspicion of obstructing justice for allegedly lying to police about events that night.

Newly unsealed search warrants state that the resident of an apartment at 1501 W. 2320 South was throwing a going-away party for a friend when Urcino — whom the tenant did not know — arrived with several friends.

About an hour later, Candelario — who is a friend of the tenant — arrived, and Candelario and Uricino almost immediately began arguing.

The tenant said Urcino, who was dressed all in red, brandished a gun and told Cadelario, "I'm not afraid," according to a search warrant affidavit.

Both Urcino and Candelario were separately forced to leave the apartment.

Less than 30 seconds later, the tenant told police, he heard gunshots and came outside to see Urcino lying on the grass. Next to him, two unidentified males were firing handguns in the direction of where Candelario and Anderson had been parked, the tenant told police.

West Valley City police officers who responded at about 2:20 a.m., found Urcino, bleeding from stab wounds to the chest and neck, on a sidewalk in front of an apartment complex. He was rushed to Jordan Valley Hospital in West Valley, where he died.

Anderson, after initially lying to police, told them he was waiting outside by his car when he heard a "commotion" and saw Urcino and Cadelario on the front porch of the apartment, according to the affidavit.

Anderson told police that Urcino pushed Candelario and then reached into the waistband of this pants for a gun. Anderson said that as he turned to get into his car, he heard 3-4 gunshots, and that Candelario came running over and asked for a ride home, according to the affidavit.

Candelario, who suffered a knife cut to his forefinger and a shoulder injury, turned himself in and was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on July 13. He was released on July 22, according to jail officials.

Anderson was booked on July 14 and released on July 16.

Police noted in the affidavits that although there were 40-50 people at the party, officers were only able to "gather up" five of them, and all were "extremely vague and not forthcoming with answers during interviews."

Sought in the search warrants were Candelario's clothing, blood, fingerprints and DNA. Police also sought electronic and social media communications made by Urcino, and by his cousin, whom Urcino had invited to the party.

Police have said they believe the case is gang-related but that the level of gang involvement was under investigation.

West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said Tuesday, "We are confident that we have identified the responsible party. This case poses a number of challenges, including the lack of cooperation by the many witnesses present. Despite this, we are continuing to develop this case in cooperation with the DA's office."

Vainuku added: "The release of a suspect is not entirely uncommon in a case as complex as this. It's important to remember that a case doesn't end with an arrest, rather it's just the beginning."
