A pedestrian was critically injured Friday after a car struck him in South Salt Lake.

The 52-year-old man was crossing 3300 South near 800 West — which is not an intersection and does not have a crosswalk — when he was struck by a westbound Dodge Nitro, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller. The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m.

"He was carried about 40 feet from the point of impact," Keller said. "… The setting sun was extreme tonight and probably a factor in this."

The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The westbound lanes of 3300 South are blocked while the major accident team investigates the crash. The driver, who was not injured, is cooperating with the investigation, Keller said.
