A man suffered a chemical burn Friday at a Kennecott Copper plant.

The 43-year-old contractor was delivering lime to the concentrator plant at 10200 S. 8400 West, which is just east of Copperton, when a line broke and exposed him to the caustic substance, said Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett. The incident occurred about 6:45 p.m.

The man's upper torso was burned, added Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell.

"We have on-site emergency responders which… took him, [and] we have showers on site," Bennett said. "So we showered him at 7:03 p.m."

A medical helicopter arrived and took the man to the hospital.

"As far as his condition, he was conscious and his vitals were normal," Bennett said.

Investigators do not know yet why the line broke. The lime is used to balance pH levels at the plant, Bennett said.
