The Cache County Sheriff's Office arrested three teenagers on Friday while investigating an incident that began when a ranch hand allegedly found the teens in his campsite in Temple Fork, a tributary of Logan Canyon, and fired his gun.

An 18-year-old man was booked into Cache County Jail under suspicion of vehicle burglary, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and obstruction. A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were referred to juvenile court on similar charges, according to a Logan police news release.

Investigators are still looking for a fourth juvenile, whom they consider a person of interest.

No charges will be filed against the ranch hand.

After the ranch hand allegedly found the teens at his campsite and yelled at them, he fired one round from a handgun into the ground, the sheriff's office reported. At that point, the teens left.

However, the teens later crashed their vehicle near Spawn Creek, less than a mile from the ranch hand's campsite, in an attempt to escape. The man and boy made their way from Temple Fork, located about 16 miles up Logan Canyon, to the mouth of the canyon, where they called a police dispatcher and reported being shot at with a shotgun, the sheriff's office reported.

A SWAT team responded and attempted to make contact with the ranch hand using bullhorns and, eventually, a distraction device. But he had left the camp to go to work, the sheriff's office reported.

They later found the ranch hand — a Wyoming man about 40, working for a Cache Valley company — after he returned to camp a few hours later.

Sheriff Chad Jensen said the gunfire didn't injure anyone, but the boys suffered some minor injuries from the car crash.

By mid-afternoon, Jensen said, detectives were interviewing the boys to get their side of the story and find out what they were doing at the campsite.
