Police arrested a man who allegedly broke out the driver's side window during an attempted carjacking of a terrified woman pulling into her west Salt Lake City driveway.

Detectives say the 36-year-old woman had just returned to her home, near 1200 West and Pacific Avenue (450 South), at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday. When she began to open her door to exit the car, the suspect rushed up, pointed what she thought was a handgun at her, and demanded her keys.

When she instead slammed the door shut, the suspect smashed the window and then jumped into a nearby car and drove away.

However, a responding officer soon spotted the suspect vehicle nearby and pulled it over. The driver jumped out and ran, but other officers responding to the scene located him nearby. Once again, he attempted to flee before being subdued with a shock from a Taser.

The 39-year-old suspect — who has a long criminal record of assault and attempted assault convictions — was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony attempted robbery and misdemeanor criminal mischief and fleeing police counts.

Police did not recover a firearm.
