Police are turning to Facebook for evidence related to a deadly West Valley City shooting earlier this year.

A Magna teenager allegedly shot and killed Marcos Cardenas, 22, at a bus stop on June 10 after investigators say the two argued about gang ties.

The teen, who was 15 at the time of the incident, has since been charged in 3rd District Juvenile Court with first-degree felony murder and three counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony.

A West Valley City police officer filed a search warrant on July 8 to collect information from the Facebook accounts of both Cardenas and the suspect. The officer believed he would find evidence of gang affiliation on their accounts, according to the warrant.

Witnesses told police that Cardenas and the defendant were on a bus when they allegedly got into an argument about gang affiliations and agreed to fight one another at the next bust stop, according to the warrant.

The two left the bus at 5610 W. 3500 South, and the defendant allegedly shot Cardenas with a handgun. Police arrived and apprehended the suspect a short distance away.

In a police interview, the defendant denied being a member of any gang, according to the warrant.

A preliminary hearing for the defendant has been set to begin Oct. 26 before Judge Dane Nolan.

The Salt Lake Tribune does not identify juvenile defendants unless they have been certified to stand trial in adult court.
