Holding what he claimed was a bomb, a man robbed the Wells Fargo Bank in Hyrum. He remained at large Wednesday.

Cache County sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said the suspect — described as a white man in his early 30s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 160 pounds with long brown hair and a handle bar-style mustache and wearing a long-sleeved shirt, cargo shorts, a wide-brimmed hat and glasses — entered the bank at 10 E. Main St. about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday.

He approached a teller, the suspicious package in hand, and demanded money, saying he had an explosive device. Witnesses later told police he appeared to have a small device in his hand.

After receiving money, he fled the bank on foot; it was unknown if he had a vehicle waiting for him outside.

Not knowing the whereabouts of the alleged bomb, deputies evacuated bank employees and people from neighboring businesses and the Hyrum City Library. The Cache County Bomb Squad cleared the bank and surrounding buildings and grounds without finding anything suspicious.

The FBI is assisting the sheriff's office with investigation of the holdup.
