A Guatemalan man who was wanted for murder was returned to his home country last week, five months after he was found in Salt Lake City.

Walter Guillermo Reyes, 42, is suspected in the 2011 shooting death of a man who was horseback riding with his family in the Guatemalan village of Honduritas, according to a statement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In February, U.S. Marshals received information indicating Reyes might be living in or near Salt Lake City; he was found and arrested Feb. 26 near 600 South and 500 West, agents wrote. Reyes asked not to be deported, but a Salt Lake City immigration judge denied the request. He was taken to Guatemala on Friday.

"For the family members and other victims in this case, justice has taken some time, but they can take consolation in the fact the alleged assailant is now being held accountable," said Daniel Bible, field office director for ICE enforcement and removal operations in Salt Lake City. "Violent criminals who commit reprehensible crimes and believe they can evade justice by fleeing to the U.S. should be on notice — they will find no refuge here."
