Just in time for Pioneer Day, a stretch of 5600 West in West Jordan is being reopened for the first time since construction work began last February.

West Jordan Mayor Kim V. Rolfe said that $6 million in road-widening work has been completed on a stretch of the arterial from 6200 South to 7000 South.

"Completion of this project not only benefits West Jordan but also the whole west side of the valley," he stated. "Expanding the road from two lanes to five lanes will help traffic move more efficiently and accommodate the expected increase in traffic volume in the coming years."

The project was done by Kilgore Contracting. Federal grant money paid for about 93 percent of the project, with West Jordan and neighboring West Valley City contributing the remainder.

Along with more lanes, new sidewalks and bicycle lanes have been added to the road, as well as a new traffic signal at the intersection of 5600 West and 7000 South.

Next up is a similar project, currently in the design stage, for the 7800 South to 8600 South span of 5600 West.
