A man was in critical condition Tuesday after his motorcycle was hit from behind by a minivan in southwest Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said the accident occurred at 7:17 a.m., near 2150 West and Indiana Avenue (about 800 South).

The motorcyclist, a 54-year-old man, sustained extensive injuries when his bike became embedded in the front of minivan. His identity was being withheld pending notification of family.

"He's in pretty bad shape," McGowan said, adding that the accident was a grim reminder for motorists to be aware of an increase in motorcycles on the road this time of year, and the need to maintain a safe distance from the lower-profile bikes in traffic.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, though the eastbound motorcyclist may have been slowing to make a right turn off of Indiana when the minivan collided with him.

The driver of the minivan, a woman in her 60s, was uninjured.
