A Provo man was rescued Sunday from a Wayne County canyon after he ran out of water and couldn't get out on his own.

Stephen Clluff, 29, was hiking and rappelling in Robber's Roost Canyon with two friends on Saturday when they realized they couldn't leave at their intended spot.

"It included a free solo climb that was higher and more difficult than expected," according to a Wayne County Sheriff's news release.

They were forced to spend the night in the canyon and began hiking toward a different exit Sunday morning.

"However, at this point the hikers had run out of water," the news release reads. "Cluff had told his friends that he was very weak, and was complaining of dizziness, tunnel vision, shakiness, tiredness, dehydration, and mentioned that he thought he might be having heart palpitations."

Cluff's friends left him in a shady spot while they went for help. They managed to call Wayne County search and rescue by 3 p.m.

About four hours later, a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter spotted Cluff walking along a fence line. Emergency responders reached him, and he was eventually cleared with no life-threatening medical problems, according to the release.
