A family and their pets escaped without injury Thursday after a fire started in the basement of their Riverton home.

Fire crews responded to a second-alarm call at a home located at 5364 W. Silver Spot Court (13780 South) at 1:40 p.m.

Battalion Chief Brian Anderton said the home suffered serious smoke damage and is uninhabitable.

"The mother and her six children will not be able to live in the home for the time being," Anderton said."

Two dogs were also evacuated. One dog followed the family out the home. Fire crews rescued the other dog and gave it oxygen treatment for smoke inhalation; it's expected to survive.

South Jordan Fire Department and Bluffdale Fire Department assisted with the operation. Crews knocked down the fire within 20 minutes.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
