A man entered a woman's Salt Lake City apartment on Wednesday and allegedly stabbed both her and her dog, police say.

Salt Lake City police sent a tweet about 8:40 p.m. saying the suspect had been arrested.

"It appears this is not a random act of violence," the tweet added.

Another tweet said more details would be disclosed Thursday.

The woman, 32, was sleeping in her apartment near 850 S. 400 West when she woke about 3:30 p.m. to see a man she did not know, said Detective Cody Lougy said Wednesday afternoon. He allegedly hit her on the head with some object and a fight ensued, during which he allegedly stabbed her in the stomach, Lougy said.

The woman fled the apartment to find help, and the man fled sometime after her. At some point before he fled, he also allegedly stabbed the woman's dog, which police described as a terrier.

Police were called to the scene and found "quite a bit of blood" on the sidewalk and in the woman's apartment, Lougy said. The woman was taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian and is also expected to survive.
