Provo firefighters quickly snuffed a blaze on "Y" Mountain early Wednesday before gusty winds could spread it through the parched brush.

The fire, spotted around 10 p.m. Tuesday, was blamed on an errant Chinese lantern that had been launched into the air and drifted onto the mountain's slope near the "Y" trailhead.

The Provo Fire Department said it had issued a ticket, which could include a $500 or higher fine, to a man who came forward to admit being responsible for the blaze. The suspects also could end up paying for fire suppression costs.

Provo and U.S. Forest Service crews continued to do mop up work and watch for any flareups at the roughly 2-acre fire scene at dawn broke Wednesday.

No injuries were reported.
