The Salt Lake Tribune will host a debate among candidates for Salt Lake City mayor Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

The event at Nancy Tessman Theater inside Salt Lake City's Main Library is free and open to the public.

Moderated by Jennifer Napier-Pearce, the debate will be live streamed at http://www.sltrib.com and simulcast on KCPW 88.3 FM.

The format will not include questions from the audience but readers can submit questions via email by noon Thursday to jnpearce@sltrib.com or to @jnpearce or #Tribdebate on Twitter.

Two-term incumbent Ralph Becker will face off against four challengers: former state legislator Jackie Biskupski; community activist George Chapman; City Council Chairman Luke Garrott; and businessman Dave Robinson.

Among the issues likely to be discussed are transportation, homelessness, public safety and economic development. Other hot topics include relocation of the Utah State Prison, the potential for new sales taxes and the mayor's proposed $150 million bond for recreation and open space.

Vote by mail ballots already have been sent to all registered voters in the city.

The two top vote-getters in the non-partisan Aug. 11 primary election will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

Salt Lake City is the only municipality in Salt Lake County with a mayoral contest this year, although there are dozens of city council races underway.
