St. George • A trooper is healing from injuries suffered last week as he stood beside a crashed motorist's car and a BMW collided with it, trapping him beneath.

The Spectrum reports that Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce says Trooper David Schiers is walking, talking, and starting to eat and drink after sustaining broken ribs, a punctured lung and other injuries.

Jaws of life were used to lift the car off of Schiers, who was later listed in critical but stable condition at a Salt Lake City-area hospital.

He has been upgraded to serious condition.

Royce says Schiers still has some leg and back issues and has a long way to go toward a full recovery.
