To help attract bicyclists to mass transit, the Utah Transit Authority is offering free bike-safety kits worth $40, and free $20 cards to use electronic bike lockers located at the Salt Lake City Central Station.

The free kits, available on a first-come, first-served basis, include a safety vest, two LED bike lights and a bike map.

The kits and cards are available at UTA customer-service centers located at 600 W 250 South in Salt Lake City; 2393 Wall Avenue in Ogden; and 1145 S. 750 East in Orem.

UTA says the number of cyclists using transit has increased greatly in recent years.

To accommodate them, it recently added bike lockers at many stations — and is in the process of installing 100 vertical bike racks on TRAX trains that allow hanging bicycles out of the way. UTA says it is exploring options for adding bike storage racks on FrontRunner trains.

UTA is also in the process of installing bike racks at bus stops throughout its system. Buses also have bike racks available.

UTA also says it has been partnering with local jurisdictions to paint bike lanes to connect to TRAX and FrontRunner stations.
