A double-stabbing outside a downtown Salt Lake City homeless shelter ended with two men hospitalized in serious condition and their alleged assailant behind bars.

Salt Lake City police detectives said that about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the 24-year-old suspect got into a possible drug-related altercation with the first victim near the Road Home shelter, 210 S. Rio Grande St., and ran after allegedly stabbing the man in the stomach.

When several bystanders chased him, he purportedly turned and stabbed a second man, then jumped into a black Chevrolet Impala and sped away.

However, police responding to a 911 call soon located the vehicle near 400 South and 1000 West and arrested the suspect, who was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault.

The victims were taken to the hospital in serious condition, but were expected to recover.
