Nearly 700 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Taylorsville were without electricity Sunday after a suspect in a stolen car went out of control trying to elude police and crashed into a utility pole.

RMP said that by 11 a.m. repair crews were able to restore service to the customers in the 84129 zip code area affected by the outage.

Unified Police Chief Deputy Justin Hoyal said reported that one of his agency's officers spotted the stolen vehicle and the suspect sped away, running a red light at 4700 South and 2200 West. The officer suspended pursuit due to public safety concerns, but seconds later the suspect crashed into the power pole about 6:20 a.m.

The car was totaled, and the 28-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in fair condition Sunday afternoon. He will be booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of auto theft and fleeing police when he is released by doctors.

No other injuries were reported.
