Northern Utahns mopped up Thursday after a wild series of thunderstorms rocked the region overnight, bringing heavy rainfall and street flooding, as well as power outages to both Salt Lake and Davis counties.

While winds spiked above 50 mph in some places and lightning crashed and rattled homes along the Wasatch Front, numerous locales easily topped an inch of rainfall through a six-hour spell between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service reported.

The mountain communities of Mantua and Alta measured 1.23 and 1.16 inches, respectively, while Ogden was awash in 1.17 inches. Farmington reported 1.16 inches, Huntsville 1.06 and Brigham City 1.05, while Salt Lake City hit 0.93 — a record for the date, beating the old 0.35 mark set in 1876 — and Provo 0.84 inches.

Rocky Mountain Power crews scrambled to restore storm-related electrical outages to 2,500 customers in West Valley City and 1,200 in Ogden, tasks they had accomplished by dawn Thursday.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorm activity was forecast again Thursday, albeit not as severe as that late Wednesday. The wet cycle was to continue on Friday along the Wasatch Front, with high temperatures in the mid- to upper-80s — same as on Thursday.

However, southern Utahns — after some isolated showers and thunderstorms Thursday — looked for the return of drier weather on Friday, when high temperatures in the upper-80s to low-90s were predicted under clearing, sunny skies.

The Utah Division of Air Quality rated all monitoring districts as "green," or healthy through the end of the work week.

The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website listed only mold as "high," with all other allergens "low" on its pollen index as of Thursday.
