A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was in serious condition Wednesday, three days after being hit by a car while responding to an earlier crash on Interstate 15 near Cedar City.

However, UHP Col. Danny Fuhr said that Trooper David Schiers was making progress in his recovery from extensive injuries ranging from a broken back, leg and ribs to a punctured lung.

Schiers was inspecting a Ford passenger car that had hydroplaned and struck a cable barrier near the highway about 3 p.m. Monday when a second car, a black BMW, collided with the Ford. The BMW's impact propelled the Ford on top of the trooper.

Emergency workers had to use the heavy machinery to lift the Ford off Shiers, who was taken by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
