A girl's relative helped save her life after she nearly drowned Saturday in a Herriman reservoir.

On Saturday afternoon, the 8-year-old girl and family members were swimming in Blackridge Reservoir, which is on the south end of the city. At some point, her brother-in-law noticed that she was unconscious and she was pulled out of the water, said Desmond Johnson, a water rescue expert with Unified Fire Authority.

After about 30 seconds of CPR, she regained consciousness and seemed fine when paramedics arrived. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Johnson said.

"It was certainly a happy ending," Johnson said. "… The message of this is attentiveness. Accidents are going to happen, but if we're there and someone's watching, there's the best possible chance of overcoming that bad situation."
