Lehi police have identified Barbara North, of Heber, as the woman who died Saturday in a FrontRunner crash.

North, 71, was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by her husband, 83-year-old Darrell North, when they got stuck on the tracks near 500 West and 300 North in Lehi. Police are still unsure why they were stuck between the crossing arms when a northbound train hit them Saturday evening, said Sgt. Bart Smith.

Darrell North was taken to the hospital in "extremely critical condition," but was improving as of Sunday morning, Smith said.

"He tried to cross the tracks as the arms were coming down," Utah Transit Authority spokesman Remi Barron said Saturday. "Our arms were operating properly … but he may have become confused and stopped on the tracks."

Barron wanted to remind the public that the railroad crossing arms are designed to break away, so if one comes down in front of your car while you're on the tracks, "you should keep going and not stop," he said.
