A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder, accused of shooting a man near a West Valley City bus stop after investigators say they argued about their gang ties.

The Magna boy, who will turn 16 next month, appeared before a juvenile court judge for the first time Friday. Along with first-degree felony murder, he was charged with three counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony, in the June 10 shooting of 22-year-old Marco Cardenas.

The firearm charges allege he fired the gun "for the benefit of or in association with any criminal street gang," according to charging documents.

Deputy Salt Lake County Attorney Patricia Cassell confirmed Friday that prosecutors are seeking to have the teenager's case moved to the adult court system.

He is expected to be in court again on July 14 for a scheduling conference, where attorneys will schedule a preliminary hearing and certification hearing in his case, according to court officials.

The teen and Cardenas were riding a Utah Transit Authority bus on June 10 when they got into an argument "about their respective gangs," West Valley City police wrote in court papers filed in 3rd District Juvenile Court.

The two exited the bus at a stop near the Burger King at 5600 West and 3500 South. Once they had left the bus, the 15-year-old allegedly drew a gun and fired five times toward Cardenas. "Cardenas attempted to run away, but a bullet struck him in the chest and he collapsed," a probable cause statement reads. "[The teen] fled to a nearby field."

Officers quickly captured the boy as he ran through a nearby field — and where he allegedly dropped his firearm.

He is currently being held in a juvenile facility, according to court officials.

The Salt Lake Tribune does not identify juvenile defendants unless they have been certified to stand trial in adult court.
