Police say they arrested a Salt Lake City man in the act of stripping metal wire from a utility box — but not before he caused $13,000 in damage.

At least, SLCPD detectives say, the 26-year-old is behind bars after being arrested at the scene of the crime, near 1700 South and 500 West about 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony criminal mischief.

He remained in jail Friday in lieu of $2,640 bail.
