A gang-related bus ride argument escalated once two males got off at a West Valley City stop, ending in multiple gunshots that left a 22-year-old man dead and a juvenile behind bars.

Police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said that Marco Cardenas, of West Valley City, died at the hospital shortly after being struck by at least one of several bullets fired about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday by the juvenile at a bus stop near 5600 West and 3500 South. The teen then fled on foot, later being found by police hiding in a tree.

Vainuku said police also located a handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, in a field near the arrest site.

Detectives interviewed a number of witnesses, both on the bus on which the pair had been riding and at the shooting scene, which was just outside a Burger King restaurant.

Witnesses told investigators the two had exchange words on the bus, agreed to get off to continue their argument, and began fighting at the bus stop. As the altercation grew more physical, the juvenile pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police were told.
