One person died and two others were taken to a hospital after a traffic crash in West Valley City.

West Valley City police identified the deceased as 15-year-old Rodrigo Zabala Lopez and said he was a Granger High School student.

The crash occurred about 3:45 p.m. near 2450 S. Bangerter Highway, said West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxanne Vainuku.

A woman was driving a Nissan Rogue north on Bangerter while she was cleaning her glasses, Vainuku said. When she looked up, the traffic light was green, but she didn't know it had switched from red only seconds earlier, Vainuku said. Her Rogue crashed into a Plymouth Neon that was carrying three people.

The backseat passenger was killed, and the driver and front seat passenger were seriously injured and taken to a hospital, Vainuku said.

The highway was closed near the accident until about 7 p.m.
