A 19-year-old man who died while rock climbing near Cedar City was identified Wednesday by police.

Thomas Harley Rueben Christensen, of Cedar City, was climbing with two friends near State Road 14 just outside of Cedar City about 5 p.m. Monday when he fell 20 to 30 feet, according to a statement by the Cedar City Police Department.

Rescue crews found the victim — who appeared to have suffered broken bones and a head injury — with his friends about 200 feet above the road, police said. Medics tried to resuscitate the victim, but he died before a helicopter could arrive to take him to a hospital.

Police had initially withheld the man's name so his family could be notified.
