Police in Murray are investigating what appears to be a double murder and suicide that left two adults and a child dead on Sunday.

Police received reports of a possible shooting at the Vantana Apartments, in the 200 block of E. Vantana Court (6600 South), just before noon Sunday, Murray police spokesman Kenny Bass said.

Officers responding to 911 calls found a man, a woman and a child dead from obvious gunshot wounds inside the residence. Bass could not say what type of gun was used in the shooting or whether the victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

"It appears the male shot the female and the child and then shot himself," said Bass. "It's horrible."

Police did not immediately release the names and ages of those involved.

Three other children were also in the home, but were not injured, Bass said.

It wasn't immediately clear what precipitated the shooting.

Investigators were still working to clarify the identities of those dead and their relationships to each other and to the unharmed children, Bass said. He also did not know whether all those inside the home at the time of the shooting also live in the apartment.

Authorities were attempting to locate family members to avoid having to place the unharmed children in state care, he said.
