A 19-year-old man from the Philippines drowned while swimming without a life jacket in cold, rough water at Otter Creek Reservoir on Saturday, authorities say.

The man was boating with friends at Otter Creek State Park near Antimony, about 220 miles south of Salt Lake City. He and another man went swimming but got into trouble when the winds picked up and whipped up the water, the Piute County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

One swimmer was pulled from the water by friends, but the 19-year-old went under and couldn't be located, so the boaters contacted state park rangers. A search for the man began about 3 p.m. Water temperatures were about 63 degree Saturday, the sheriff's office said.

Search teams used sonar equipment to locate and recover the man's body, which was transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy.

Authorities have not released the man's name pending notification of his family.

In all about a dozen state and local police, military and wildlife agencies aided in the search with personnel and equipment because a search and rescue conference was being held at nearby Fish Lake Resort on Saturday, the sheriff's office said.
