A stretch of Interstate 15 was closed to northbound traffic into Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City after a tanker truck carrying oil appeared to break and smoke.

Utah Highway Patrol officers were diverting northbound traffic off I-15 at 600 South in Salt Lake City and planned to back the closure up to 1300 South, Trooper Jared Cornia reported about 11:45 a.m.

Smoke was seen coming from the tanker truck about 11:25 a.m. near 600 North, Cornia said, but the tanker did not actually catch fire.

The tanker, which came to rest across several lanes, looked like it had begun to break along a seam. The stretch of freeway was reopened by 3:25 p.m.
