A Layton woman was in hospitalized and a male neighbor behind bars after a domestic dispute culminated in a stabbing early Friday.

Layton police Lt. Travis Lyman said officers were dispatched about 7:25 a.m. to the Quail Cove Apartments complex, at 2090 N. Hill Field Road, on a reported domestic dispute in progress.

However, officers learned that an argument — which had erupted between a mother and her two sons in her unit — apparently spilled over into another when she fled, and her 29-year-old son followed her.

The suspect, thinking his mother was in the neighbor's apartment, kicked in the door, confronted and stabbed the 53-year-old woman living there in the chest. He then went back to his mother's apartment, where police arrested him without further incident.

The neighbor woman, initially in critical condition, was flown to University Hospital, where she was later upgraded to serious.

The suspect was taken into custody and then to the hospital for evaluation, Lyman said.
