Brian Dale was sworn in Thursday as Salt Lake City fire chief.

The Salt Lake City Council recently approved Mayor Ralph Becker's appointee by a 5-1 vote.

The lone dissenting vote came from council Chairman Luke Garrott. Prior to the council's vote, the body was briefed by the city attorney's office regarding a complaint to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment by Dale. The mayor's office has said the allegations are unfounded.

Dale has most recently served as deputy chief and is a 29-year veteran of the department.
