Salt Lake City police have identified the body of a fatally shot man found along the Jordan River, but they continued to investigate whether his death was a case of homicide or suicide.

Detective Greg Wilking said the deceased was a homeless man, 36-year-old Anthony Paul Hernandez.

Investigators believe the man died from a gunshot wound, but were still looking for the weapon. For now, the death remains a suspicious one, police said.

A passerby found the man's body Monday afternoon off a trail near 800 North and Riverside Drive (1600 West). The man's body was close to the trail and in the open.

Officers were investigating secondhand reports of a shot fired near the trail some time before the body was found, but had not found any witnesses who heard a gunshot.
