Police are investigating a suspicious death of a man near the Jordan River in Salt Lake City.

A passer-by found the man's body Monday afternoon off a trail near 800 North and Riverside Drive (1600 West), said Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking.

Officers found the man suffered trauma that may be a gunshot wound, Wilking said.

"We're investigating it possibly as a homicide, but haven't ruled out suicide," Wilking said.

The man's body was close to the trail and in the open.

"Anyone walking by on the trails could see it," Wilking said.

Medical examiners were trying to determine the cause of the man's death, Wilking said. Investigators had learned the man's identity as of Monday night but were not releasing his name pending family notifications.

The man, who was in his 20s, appears to have died within the day, Wilking said.

Officers were investigating secondhand reports of a shot fired near the trail some time before the body was found, but had not found any witnesses who heard a gunshot.
